NovaVision VRT™ Vision Restoration Therapy

Approximately 1.5 million stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) victims in the U.S. suffer from  significant vision loss, and that number grows by more than 90,000 new patients each year. Previously these patients went untreated, but now Jones Eye Centers is offering a vision therapy that treats this neurological vision loss.

Jones Eye Centers is now offering NovaVision VRT™ Vision Restoration Therapy™.  VRT is an at-home therapy performed on a an FDA-cleared medical device that can help restore vision lost as a result of stroke or traumatic brain injury. The way this works is by stimulating undamaged parts of the brain so that they become programmed to take over for the damaged areas.  This is called neuroplasticity, and it is similar to the way a computer programmer can reprogram a working part of a computer to take over from a section that has gone bad.   Studies show that over 70% of VRT patients experience improvements in their vision that restore their ability to confidently and independently complete daily activities such as grooming, reading, walking, watching television. (As with all therapies, individual results vary.)

        Pre-NovaVision VRT                    Post-NovaVision VRT

You know how many patients can work to gradually regain the ability to use arms and legs that were paralyzed by stroke.  Patients with stroke or TBI typically need time for impaired brain functions to recover, and after most injuries, therapy can help to restore function. VRT is considered a personalized physical therapy program for the brain. As with any rehabilitation program, you need to work at it every day.  So the VRT device is used at home for consistent daily treatment.   Improvement is gradual, and for some patients the first improvements can be noticed as early as a few months after starting the vision therapy.

VRT Process:

  • Patient calls NovaVision for an initial screening to find out if VRT is appropriate.
Patient completes an initial visit and evaluation at SureVision Eye Centers to determine if VRT diagnostic testing is recommended.
  • Diagnostic tests are administered at SureVision and results are used to create a customized vision therapy program.
  • Patient completes daily therapy sessions at home on a VRT medical device for approximately 6-7 months.
  • Therapy results are sent monthly to NovaVision for evaluation and updating to optimize progress.
  • After completing 6-7 months VRT, additional therapy may be recommended.
